Today we awoke in the port of Maui. Maui is an island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. Sprawling Haleakala National Park encompasses the island’s highest peak, volcanic Haleakala, as well as the pools and waterfalls of Ohe’o Gulch, accessed via scenic, winding Hana Highway. The island's 45-50km of beaches include golden-crescent Kapalua, sheltered from strong currents by lava-rock promontories.
We had Breafast in the Ahola Cafe, food is typically American, fried and plentiful. The bacon is so crispy that you pick up with your fingers to eat. Juice is very sweet overpowering the flavour. Memories flood back from our 2008 visit to the United States. It isn’t bad food just different which is good. Keeps life interesting.
Scanning the people around us, most seem slightly older to us. Apparently only 30 teenagers on board. There is very few Japanese tourists in direct contrast to Honolulu. As a breakdown most passengers are Americans, obviously, we have heard a few Aussie accents including a Toowoomba lilt and other accents from around the world and a good good percentage of foreign languages.
This morning while Jacqs slept, we had breakfast and did a tour of the ship. An amazing amount of stuff aboard including a full basketball court.
Whale watching, we traveled ashore and then by tour bus to a smaller harbour.
Our boat - the voyager.
Leaving Harbour:
And we saw two humpback whales, that blowed, tail splashed and drived for 2 hours.
Excellent trip. Poor Jacqueline wanted excitement and she got it when she bounced off the deck in rough seas. The ride was like a wet roller coaster and certainly more fun.
And we got free dolphin and whale poster from the Pacific Whale foundation. Cos has a use for his dolphin poster back home.
After brief drive through security check points, we enjoyed a very late lunch (4pm) at the ship’s diner themed restaurant. Too much food...
We returned to shore to buy some medical supplies for Jacqs’ knee.
While at “Long’s drug store” we saw another American invention for putting on socks. Only in America moment, I guess.
We sat in the local shopping mall to clean up Jacqs’ damaged knee. It seemed strange to see a ice rink in the mall.
We walked around the outdoor shopping mall until 7pm local time (3pm Toowoomba time).
The ship looked impressive at night.
On arrival back to the ship, our cheese plater arrived.
After cheese we sought out some desert as we had a
late lunch.
We enjoyed Polynesian dance production in which Jacqs danced Polynesian style with a young handsome Polynesian (warrior/dancer). Jacqueline doesn’t want to wash her hands anymore!
After quick coffee, melissa and I headed to Fleetwood Mac tribute.
