Day 5 ( Thursday 6th November- Exploring Trieste

Last night we continued exploring Treiste by finding dinner. We went to pizza place that specialises in seafood. Very fishy but nice.

We (cos) is trying different foods this time. Melissa is generally more adventurous with food than Cos who tends eat widely except seafood.

Another striking observation is that smoking in public spaces and restaurants remains common in Italy. While overall numbers seem lower, there’s a noticeable rise in younger smokers. Dogs continue to accompany their owners almost everywhere—a shift from what we’ve seen on previous visits.

Among young men, the prevailing hairstyle is short and sharp, often paired with a pronounced five o’clock shadow, giving off a subtly metro-inspired vibe. Italian fashion continues to impress: tailored, elegant, and far more refined than the generally relaxed style seen in Australia. Tattoos are present but far less conspicuous than back home.

As tourists, we’re easy to spot—but Americans stand out even more, often with booming voices and little effort to blend in.

Early this morning, a cruise ship docked at the port across from the hotel. We certainly will not miss our ship.

This morning we had coffee in the oldest coffee shop apparently in Trieste. Very interesting ,lovely coffee and nice breakfast. In the interest of international affairs Melissa and I had espresso coffee Italian style at the counter. Apparently Italians have their breakfast coffee at the counter at the coffee shop.  Normally it’s an espresso with perhaps a bun or something as breakfast.

After breakfast, we went for a wander through the city seeing the architectural marvels of this truly ancient city.

One of the highlights was revisiting a Roman era amphitheatre. We saw it briefly in the late afternoon yesterday but today we saw it in better light.

Fun fact we learnt is that Italy has thousands of freshwater fountains set up in many cities. The water is of a high-quality so no need to buy water from a shop.

Chance for Cos to get a short haircut and develop a 5 o’clock shadow to blend in 😎
